THE MAY 2009 TOURNAMENT

A fantastic time was enjoyed by all over the weekend at the Bookham Colts 2009 tournament, held at the Leatherhead FC stadium, Fetcham Grove.

This was a huge event, held over both Saturday and Sunday with over 750 players in 83 football teams, competitions were held in all age groups from under 7s to under 14s, attracting more than 2000 people to the stadium. 

Organisers John Andrews and Jeff Potts were delighted with the way that the tournament ran and the way in which the teams competed. 

Jeff Potts, Bookham Colts Chairman stated, “Our affiliation with Leatherhead FC demonstrates the commitment of both clubs to youth football in the community. To hold the tournament in a stadium makes the event very special and atmospheric. The high quality grass surface for pitches and brand new match balls help the teams play some impressive football. I strongly believe that this tournament is one that the players will remember.” 

Peter Ashdown, Leatherhead FC's acting Chairman said: 'We were delighted to host the Bookham Colts two-day tournament at Fetcham Grove and to see so many families supporting the event. We are already looking forward to repeating it next year. From a personal point of view I was delighted to see our Leatherhead under-10s team win their competition. This weekend is an important part of 'The Tanners' commitment to local Youth football and our relationship with Bookham Colts, whose organisation of the tournament was superb. I would like to thank all the ninety volunteers from Bookham Colts for their hard work as well as all the Leatherhead FC staff and committee who were involved’.

John Andrews, Bookham Colts Development Officer said, “The team efforts we all witnessed on the pitch during the tournament was only matched by the team effort of the Bookham Colts parents. Over 100 volunteers gave up their morning or afternoon to ensure the event ran as smoothly as possible. They were all rewarded with the praise of visiting teams who congratulated Bookham Colts on such a happy, friendly and efficiently run tournament.” 

Jeff Potts also stated that Bookham Colts are extremely grateful to the 14 referees who helped in the smooth running of the tournament. Without them, such an event could not take place. They would also like to thank Leatherhead FC for the use of their facility and their kind and enthusiastic support. 

Finally, a big thank you to all teams and supporters for competing and creating such a friendly and exiting atmosphere.
